Common HVAC Problems

Warm air from the vents in summer
Check the filter and thermostat setting first. Warm air can also mean low airflow, a refrigerant fault, or an electrical fault. If the filter is clean and the setting is right, it needs a diagnosis.
No heat on a cold morning
Check the thermostat, power, and, for gas, whether other gas appliances work. A furnace that clicks but never fires, or a heat pump stuck on backup heat, needs a tech before the next cold night.
Short cycling
A system that starts and stops every few minutes can be oversized, low on airflow, or tripping a safety control. Short cycling wears parts out and leaves humidity behind.
Some rooms hot, others cold
That usually points to ductwork, airflow balance, or thermostat placement, not just the main unit. A room-by-room airflow check finds it.
Ice on the coil or lines
Turn the system off and let it thaw, check the filter, and do not keep running it iced up. Ice often means airflow or refrigerant trouble.
AC runs but does not cool: the usual reasons
Dirty filter, low refrigerant, frozen coil, outdoor condenser blocked by debris, thermostat setting, leaking ducts, an electrical part like a capacitor, or a system that is undersized or poorly insulated. Start with filter, thermostat, breaker, and debris around the outdoor unit, then get a diagnosis for the rest.
AC stopped after a power outage
Check the breaker first. A brief outage can trip it, and a single reset that stays on is a safe first check. If it trips again, leave it off and call us.
